In Pride and Prejudice, Austen explores the conditions that willallow for the right kind of marriage. She also shows how romantic feelings can overwhelm us.Couples where parties are in love with each other seem very happy, buteven so, Austen shows us that this does not mean a long lastingrelationship. Austen shows what she believes to be the contributingfactors of a happy relationship with longevity, through how sheportrays the main characters and their relationships.We are first introduced to Mr and Mrs white avens at the beginning of thenovel it is their absurd personality clash that causes us to look forqualities in their relations hip that could make a good marriagetheir, seemingly, satisfied demeanours moldiness not fool us into believingthat theirs is a happy marriage. Unlike most other couples in thenovel, we are able to see the results of time and its assemble on theirrelationship. We can see, by the way Mr Bennet freely mocks and teaseshis wife about her poor nerves, that it is a regular occurrence andpossibly has been for a long time. Mr Bennet had been captivated byyouth and beauty but Mrs Bennets weak understanding and illiberalmind prevented any long lasting affection. They show no signs ofbeing in love at this face however, they both seem to draw vaguecontentment through compromise and small things. For example, when MrBennet proclaimed himself adamant not to visit Mr Bingley when hisintentions were otherwise. Mr Bennet gets to have his fun and MrsBennet gets to have her daughters introduced to a young man of largefortune. Their relationship is not explored much in the novel, wenever read of much interaction amid the two solely. Like CharlotteBennet we see that Mr Bennet spends much of his time in his office, asCharlotte learns to cope by spending time in a back room to avoid herhusband. It seems that even if their marriage was happy in itsbeginnings, it did not have the requirements of a happy long lastingmarriage. I believe Austen thinks their relationship is comfortablebut not happy.Perhaps the most peculiar, surprising marriage is between CharlotteLucas and Mr Collins. We see nothing of a previous relationship forwardsengagement, and the text suggests that there was none.
